Description

Upcycle Design’s mission is to help people feel empowered to design that can help eliminate waste and think of innovative ways to reduce the amount of harmful material we use as a society. I have struggled with the outcome that being a printmaker means you are contributing to the vast amount of waste on Earth and I wanted to find a way to inspire people—especially designers, and business owners to realize their potential in shaping that narrative to a place where the Earth isn’t the last on the list of considerations through education and inspiration.

Process

The backbone of a successful project is research before any design begins. First off, the problem needed to be determined. What was this company trying to solve? What was going to be their mission? In today’s materialistic approach to branding and the fast-changing climate it is up to us as designers, artists, and scientists to make our products out of materials that are more in harmony with our Earth. Instead, think of innovative ways that we can help eliminate waste through technology and creativity to reduce the amount of waste we create as a society.

Outcome

Working on a brand that is supposed to be for a good cause also brought out a lot of learning opportunities. If it is to educate, you have to think about how your design is creating the messages it is trying to convey easier or harder to understand. Figuring out the root problem of what your company is trying to solve and narrowing down your target audience allows you to build a better product. Without doing the research and digging to find a strong narrative from the start can leave you in the muck trying to carve out something that won’t make sense or have a powerful meaning. Now when starting a new project, these are the steps I go through at the beginning.
